Master's Bedroom

Your head goes blank. You lower your head and kick into a wild dash. You bolt past the man who does not even react to you. You tackle the door and it rattles your bones. Your shoulder takes the brunt of the pain but you tough it out and keep going. On the way out of the room, you slip on the metal bar under the door but you manage the somehow roll back onto your feet. You stagger for a few strides and jump into the closest room. The first thing you see when you enter the room is a bed. Without a second thought, you slide under it and pull the sheets over. The lantern is at your side, still glowing as bright as ever, and you wish there was a switch to turn it off.

You saw that the man does not have eyes and hopefully, he has no way of detecting light. Protected by the thick wood and mattress above you and the sheets at both ends, you wait. You have no idea if the man even pursued you, but you imagine he did. You hear no footsteps outside the room but you keep still, breathing as softly as possible to make sure he does not hear you. Your heart sounds and feels like it is bouncing on a trampoline and you wish you could quiet that too but you cannot.

How did that man sneak up on you without making a sound? The floorboards in this mansion are old and creaky. Never mind that, where is he right now? Questions and paranoia flood your mind as you anxiously wait for something to happen. Some time passes like this and you finally calm down. You hold your breath and gather the courage to push the sheets up and peek outside. Nothing. You slide your body out of the shelter, moving as slow as a snail, swinging your lantern around in a full circle to confirm that you are, in fact, safe. There is no one else in the room. You can only hear your heartbeat and the very faint flickering of the flames as the oil burns in the lantern. You managed to evade the man- no, that monster, whatever it is.
